What a lovely story and such a wise tale to tell a child; trying hard it the most important thing, not whether we are the best t something. A lesson my daughter struggles to learn, so this book could be a good addition to our bookshelf… I think at some point many people who love books and children daydream about writing a picture book . . . "It would be so easy. All I need is a cute idea and a good illustrator." I have read well over 1,000 picture books in the last two years, and I read dozens more every week to my son. As we shared books by Mo Willems, Karen Beaumont, Audrey Wood and Don Wood , Holly Hobbie and other amazing creators, I have realized there is much more to writing a children's book than a cute idea. Magic is involved. Magic and cleverness and an understanding of the way children think. It is a rare quality. When I finished reading Dot. to my son I wondered how in the world this book got published (for reasons I will explain in a moment). Then I saw who the author was and understood. Connections. Money talks and names sell books. Vashti doesn't believe she can draw, when her art teacher urges her to just make a dot and sign her name it changes Vashti's entire view of herself and others.

The Dot - Teaching Ideas

What is more important: that Vashti is a good artist, or that Vashti is happy and able to make other people happy? Find out how people have created art throughout history. What were the first types of art? What materials were used? How has art changed through the years? Dot is an expert with a device. She can swipe, surf, tweet and tag. Funny thing is, she can do those things outside, too, just without the device. Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can't draw - she's no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says. Vashti thinks she is no good at art, but an encouraging teacher helps her to enjoy herself. The teacher's approach seemed more focused on self-esteem than actual art skills, but I guess that's more the more important thing for young kids.Ooh I have never heard of this book before, it sounds lovely. I shall have a look for it in the library. That might've been the end of it, except that the teacher frames Vashti's piece and hangs it on the wall. Thinking she can do much better than a simple dot, Vashi gets out her paints and begins to experiment. Eventually, she gains the confidence to help inspire other young artists who think they can't draw. The teacher smiles gently and encourages Vashti to just make a mark. So Dot's whole day is surrounded by computers, and smart phones with tweeting and sharing until her mother sends her outside to Reboot! Recharge! and Restart! (all techie words). And then Dot remembers that she used to like the outdoors and she finds ways to use her techie skills to play in the real world with her friends. Smallness of dot book - Drill sheets are unwieldy to handle because of their size. The dot book overcomes this limitation through loss of data: by only focusing on your dot, and the dots that are around it, you can eliminate most of the other dots. In many ways, a dot book is simply a magnification of a small area of a drill sheet.

The Dot by Peter Reynolds - Read and Create

Use the words ‘Just make a mark and see where it takes you,’ as inspiration for your own artwork. What type of mark will you make? Where will it take you? What materials will you use? Vashti goes from being a sad and angry child, with no confidence, to someone who has the maturity and ability to help someone else to believe in themselves. Everyone who are dealing with kids who feel a bit low at any point of their lives about any field, should grab this one immediately.

I suspect that parents will enjoy the sentiment even more than their children, but it is still a fun idea, and is a good prompt for kids to create their own art. Simple enough for a 4 year old, this book has had enough of an impact that grade school teachers have developed ideas to spin off of it. Seeing her artwork displayed so beautifully inspires Vashti to do better. She gets to work and starts painting a red dot, purple dot, yellow dot. Then she starts experimenting with colour mixing, always painting dots.
