Food - a fact of life provides Explore Food, a free user-friendly online nutritional analysis tool for secondary school pupils. You will explore how food can be important both in preventative health and as an aid in the management of certain chronic diseases today, in the past and in the future. Why macronutrients and antioxidants are special Evaluate the foundations of nutritional advice provided by governments by applying scientific knowledge about nutrition and considering factors that influence decision-making when it comes to food.Describe what is meant by the term ‘food as medicine’ and list a number of examples of how foods have been used as medicine in the past. On this course, you’ll learn how food science and nutrition helps us to understand and study the fascinating world of food. Explore food has been designed to be easy to use, guiding pupils through the analysis of a recipe or a day’s diet. It provides data for the pupil to analyse and draw conclusions away from their PC or tablet, further supporting their studies. Finally, we’ll discuss the complexities of nutrition science, how it’s evolving, and how nutrition misinformation may end up as fact. Then you’ll learn to apply mindfulness to the way you engage with your food.

This interactive activity challenges you to create your own Gourmet Burger using beef or lamb mince and a variety of vegetables, fruit, cheese, spices and herbs. The activity goes through the stages of ingredient selection, mixing, dividing and shaping, cooking and assembly. A detailed personalised step-by-step recipe is produced so that you can make and cook your own beef or lamb burger in the classroom or at home. Explore the importance of food processing in the journey from farm to fork to understand how crops are converted into nutritious and appealing food items for consumers. How much iron is in your cereal? In this experiment, you will devise a way of testing foods for supplemental iron additives. Then you will use your design to test different breakfast cereals to see how much iron they contain. Which brand of cereal will have the most iron in it? Analyse the biological pathways of digestion to discover how different nutrients travel and are absorbed by the body. Thinking about improving your sports performance? Want to help friends and family make the most of their physical fitness activities? One factor to consider is food! Whether you realize it or not, what you eat does change your body! It affects how you feel, and can even change how you perform in sports. This science fair project will help you explore the link between what goes in your mouth and what your legs and arms can do.

This course has been certified by the Association for Nutrition. It meets AfN standards for nutrition training of individuals working at Level 1 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). If you have a degree in an unrelated subject, you could study a postgraduate course like food safety or food quality management.
