Glenlivet 18 Year Old - Whisky from The Whisky World UK

In an attempt to coat-tail Smith’s quality whisky, and profit from his growing reputation, the illicit makers also began calling their spirits Glenlivet. Eventually in 1884, these sub-par replications led Smith to take these imitators to court where the Glenlivet Indenture was created. Well, glen equates to a ‘narrow valley’– which there happens to many in the rugged landscape of Scotland. So there is nothing to talk away about here. This bottle is one of the absolute PLV frontrunners. The whisky is an absolute buy recommendation for the most popular prices. END of the announcement! Glenlivet are not known for their brilliance, I will admit. However, their malts are carefully crafted to cater to the ever growing mass of whisky drinkers in a bid to keep them satisfied. This has been part of my struggle: I very much use my own crazy system. I score a whisky in 5 categories out of 6.5 (being perfect). So the max a whisky can score in my book is 32.5 Palate: Candied fruits and Glenfiddich freshness with a balance of dried apricot, cinnamon, toffee, ginger, and dry Sherry.

Since that times when The Glenlivet 12 YO leaves very pleasant memories about it I wanted to get some older The Glenlivet for a taste. Obviously a popular classic which has been reviewed numerous times so I'll try and add what I can. It is a very very smooth whisky. I get strong notes of fennel and aniseed - both on the nose and palate. Quite full bodied and rich, this actually reminds me more of a good blended malt in that it goes for silky smoothness rather than intriguing complexity, (think Johnnie Walker Gold or Chivas Regal 18yo). Palate: Aromas of juicy nectarines drenched in yoghurt, succulent peaches bathed in cream and a hint of butterscotch come together to create an irresistibly creamy tropical experience on the palate. Every sip is sweetened with notes of acacia honey for a truly indulgent taste sensation. NOSE: very impressive, rich, elegant, deep, with notes of apple, citrus fruits, vanilla, hints of perfume and shade of smoked young oak, in a very deep nose - subtle tones of cheese mold. PALATE: complex, medium balanced, dry, pretty much alcoholicity as for 18 YO single malt, citrus, hint of honey and fruits in lights of caramel. FINISH: long enough, warming, with notes of orange peel, vanilla, fresh oak and hints of apple and peach traces at the very end.

To develop the flavour and colour of Glenfiddich 18, the new make spirit is matured in two cask types. From America, ex-bourbon barrels are rebuilt into hogshead casks. With their charred oak staves, they impart complex notes of dried fruit, citrus peel and sweet dates. Due to their charred interior surfaces, the new make develops its decadent dark golden colour. Great whisky but a bit low on ABV. If this whould have had 48% alcohol I think it would have been more balanced, had would have had more depth. Nevertheless this is a great product :-) Well crafted and clever - a lot too discover within a very narrow range of flavors. At first this might seem a simple whisky, but it's not. Let it open up, let it evolve. Great depth with hints of peach, honey like sweetness, leafy influences, vanilla and a hidden sourness. Lovely! However Systemdown assured me that Nadurra was a good little whisky and he proved me correct with his sample of Nadurra and so when I saw the 18 year old Glenlivet I was a little intrigued. In the mouth: A tropical fruit salad with an intermission of French oak in the middle. Like on the nose, it’s initially tropical fruits. I get light and slightly lasting tastes of cantaloupe, pineapples, sapodilla, starfruit, Fuji apples, honey and dried apricots. There’s a sneaking, rising heat here too as I chew it. The French oak manifests in the form of mushrooms. Similar to the nose, I get subtle and brief tastes of dried shiitake mushrooms, chaga powder and leather. At the end are a subtle mix of more tropical fruit notes with something bitter. The bitterness makes me think of biting into a fresh coconut husk, as well as honeydew and different shades of orange. Conclusions: For about twice the price, you can buy something considerably more mature and complex. It's a deeper, darker 'livet, but still not too heavy. Glenmorangie 18 Year Old offers an unforgettable flavour profile which perfectly balances tart and sweet notes of citrus and cinnamon with indulgent aromas of nectarines, peaches, and butterscotch for an exciting tropical experience. This whisky is complemented by a luxuriously silky mouthfeel that rounds out its complex flavour profile with hints of oak and toasted grapefruit. Professional maltsters soak rich Scottish barley in water for several days, allowing it to germinate. Once the shoots have appeared, the barley is heated and dried, at which point it becomes known as ‘malt’. It has a lovely little nose of fruit, apples and pears, cinnamon, toffee, honey, vanilla, oak, little floral and a very slight cocoa aroma that appears and disappears. Balanced, rich and elegant, this is a whisky for special occasions. Over the course of 18 years our Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, takes this expression through a combination of cask types, including both first and second-fill American oak (for tropical fruitiness) and ex-sherry oak (for spicy complexity). The result of this deft navigation of the distilling arts is a gorgeous single malt that is complex, yet elegant and balanced. I do think it is important for a person to really understand the "blinders" or "lenses" that a reviewer has when they rate a whisky. No one is objective. No whisky experience is objective. However, as you get to have a "read" on a reviewer you can make more informed decisions of how to treat their rating of a "78" or a "92" based on the criteria they use.

Finish: Oaky and short and round. No real fireworks to speak of; it just sort of falls flat and dull. There is apple there but that is about it. Many different foods pair well with the Glenlivet.
