Description

When a giant octopus arrives, the children LOVE their new friend; it makes the perfect slide and is fantastic at football! But some of the grown-ups aren’t so pleased. Will they drive it away . . . or will they realise just how helpful an octopus can be? But then one day the octopus just goes away out of the blue. There’s a great surprise at the end so I won’t spoil it for you. Sure to be a winner with children – the rhyming text is fantastic to read aloud and the quirky story makes it impossible to guess what will happen next.”

Steven Lenton’s illustrations are lively and bright, especially the neon-pink octopus. They are sure to ‘brighten’ anyone’s day and are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. It’s a quirky, pretty bonkers idea that an octopus would land on anybody’s roof but if one were to I would quite like this one as it is fluorescent orange! The fantastic hand-illustrated picture coupled with a number of very interesting octopus facts is perfect for introducing kids to the animal. There are facts about where they live, what they eat and even how many hearts they have, so your kids will learn a great deal about the 8-legged sea creature. This new instalment in The Little Princess’ adventures reminds children of the responsibilities of owning a pet, as well as depicting the kind of “frenemy” friendship that children often experience. Totally relatable for children, as well as making us laugh. Waar komt ie vandaan? Waarom stort het huis niet in? Heeft ie water nodig? Waarom is hij daar?

The Griffin Gate, written by Vashti Hardy and illustrated by Natalie Smillie, published by Barrington Stoke A vividly illustrated rhyming picture book sure to please as a read-aloud. Some of the rhymes may feel a bit forced at times but overall a fun and silly story. Children will surely delight in following the octopus and his antics throughout the year. Everyone is excited when an octopus appears on the roof of a house. Everyone that is except Mrs. Antrobus. Soon the octopus has made friends with everyone and is entertaining the children, helping the community by fixing things and solving all manner of problems. But one night the octopus is nowhere to be found…

OCTOPUS SHOCKTOPUS!

Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.)? This book is really enjoyable and engaging. The rhythm and rhyme works really well and at the end we like talking about all the ways the Octopus are different. I thought the story was great for young readers. All of the readers showed a lot of facial expressions, using multiple facial expressions can allow students to see and connect with what was going on throughout the story. Maybe your kids found these octopus facts interesting and now they want to learn about other animals that live under the sea, such as sharks or starfish. If so, try out these resources:

Echt een aanrader als je zin hebt in een absurd grappig boek met natuurlijk ook een goede boodschap over niet beoordelen van een vreemdeling (in dit geval een octopus). A brilliantly bonkers story about an octopus who lives on the roof, by two award-winning and bestselling picture book creators. When a giant octopus arrives, the children LOVE their new friend; he makes the perfect slide and is fantastic at football! But some of the grown-ups aren’t so pleased. Will they drive him away . . . or will they realise just how helpful an octopus can be?

This is a lovely story and a perfect, pertinent one for 2020 about accepting differences, being welcoming and kind to one and all. This was an instant hit with all of my three children. A colourful octopus on a roof, perfectly portrayed by Steven Lenton's fantastically detailed illustrations, was a concept too irresistible to miss out on. Peter Bently's flawless, fast-paced rhythm sweeps you up as fast as an octopus' tentacle and whizzes you through an exhilarating narration of a story that is as delightful as it is unique. These octopus facts for kids are also a fantastic way of inspiring creativity.Maybe they're writing stories and they want a cool animal to be a character, or maybe they want to make an octopus out of paper, the applications of this knowledge are endless. Expanding a child's knowledge of the animal kingdom has many benefits! Learning about the wider world beyond the classroom is great for general cognitive development. This knowledge may inspire more exploration of other animals or ideas.
