About this deal

The EnergyCell Midsole used for the Salomon Supercross 3 is a famous kit that Salomon often uses in their hikers and trail runners. This multi-functional EVA Foam Midsole provides a mixture of comfort and protection. I'm always a fan of the materials Salomon use, with their skill and expertise showing through the quality choice of material. A protect rubber toe cap and rubber sole allows for easier, securer running plus more comfort. Durability is evident through the ripstop upper, a material known for its durability and resistance to scratches. My initial test runs in these shoes were all done in late fall and early winter conditions, basically a mess of snow, ice, water, and mud. These shoes were right at home in these conditions. The Salomon Supercross are an affordable and wide fitting shoe with the same insane traction that the Speedcross has become known for, and also feature a similar 10mm heel-toe drop. They are a comfortable trail runner designed for the everyman. It's a more comfortable ride for your foot which gives you that better feeling with every stride, especially on trail runs that are harsher on your feet.

The Supercross 3 GTX has a Contragrip rubber outsole, giving you maximum traction on mixed terrain. The aggressive chevron lug pattern offers multi-directional grip, which is perfect for softer ground and surfaces with loose dirt. How can this be a running shoe if it's not comfortable? Don't worry; this Salomon trail running shoe provides superior comfort with an Ortholite insole, which is super comfortable, hygienic, and allows for fresher feet for longer. However, this Ortholite insole can be thinner than EVA foam midsoles, potentially decreasing the comfort for super long hikes. The Salomon Supercross offers a comfortable fit. The heel box is nice and snug, which is something I really look for with my boney heels. The accentuated tab at the rear entrance of the heel-box helped to make for easy on and off.The Salomon Supercross 3 GTX is a versatile running shoe that can take you from the town to the trail. If you like to mix up your running, this lightweight shoe is just as at home in your local park as it is on a rugged off-road route. You can see the massive difference between the height of the foam underfoot in the forefoot and the heel. The heel is very protective, while the forefoot is rather sensitive. You can also see that while there are a lot of overlays on the upper, the crease point on the forefoot is left exposed to abrasion and early tearing. Runners who have struggled with Salomon’s often low volume fit now have a roomier option that except on highly technical terrain doesn’t compromise much on performance, For some it could be an excellent new option for more mellow terrain ultras in wet conditions.

The foot protection is light so this is not a shoe that I would recommend for heavier trails. It is the ideal shoe for softer terrain that doesn't have too much debris hanging about. The Contragrip compound that Salomon uses has excellent grip in wet conditions. The shoe cushioning is pretty decent, considering the weight of the shoe. I found it to be ample. These shoes seem perfect for my 8-12 mile runs on semi-aggressive trails with an odd wintery mix of conditions. The toe cleat is nice for that those short and fast bursts up small, steep climbs. Are you looking for trail running shoes specific to a softer terrain, that are comfortable and perform well at the same time? With their high heel counter and a large 10mm drop, we don't feel these shoes are the most stable, especially when bombing downhill, as we are here in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. That didn't stop us from putting them to the test, but we think they could do with a little bit less under the heel. Extra comfort comes from the protective toe cap, keeping you safe from toe stubs and sharp objects. The soft, stitch-free upper sole is also very comfortable against, with less chance of chafing and irritability.

I have the XA Elevate and I am looking for another pair as winter shoes with better grip in the wet/mud/snow. I was first considering the Speedcross 5 but the Supercross seems a good option. Unfortunately, given the timing (summer) and location (Front Range of Colorado) of my reviewing for the Supercross, I have not encountered any mud, but an educated guess is that the Supercross would be better in mud specifically, however the XA Elevate (and X Alpine Pro) have superior wet traction, so would consider what comes after or intermittently with the muddy sections. However, if you're looking for something with a more bare, minimalistic ground feel, I'd recommend trying out the Merrell Trail Glove 6. This Trail Glove version has a new design that imitates the shape of the bare human foot, ensuring it stays in a natural position to the ground.

Comparison to Similar Hiking Shoes

The padding of the sole is most aggressive in the heel and as perfectly suited for those heel strikers out there. The weave of the upper material reminded me of rip-stop fabric used in tents and other outdoor gear. It looks pretty rugged but retains a high level of breathability. The breathable uppers provide your foot with flexibility, a feature I find to be most endearing in running shoes.

Salomon is renowned for producing shoes that have excellent outsoles, and the Supercross 3 fall right into that category. The shoe has a Contagrip outsole that combines an aggressive lug pattern with excellent durability.

Our Verdict

The Salomon Supercross 3 GTX is an excellent choice for a lighter trail running shoe, It's got all the features that will enhance your performance and give you an exceptional run. Sam: I was surprised by the versatility and overall comfort of the Supercross. Representing a new direction for Salomon in terms of value, roomier fit, softer ride, and flexibility while retraining an aggressive outsole which doesn’t get in the way on firmer smooth terrain, the Supercross is a most versatile trail runner, hiker, travel, and even casual shoe. I will definitely be pulling them out this winter for trail runs on snow due to their flexibility and grip as well as for sloppy slushy road days. I was bowled over by the appearance of the Salomon Supercross 3 gtx; they are a really attractive shoe that doesn't have too much bulk. A dedicated trail running shoe to be certain, the Supercross finds its home on a variety of terrain and even felt pretty good on a gravel pedestrian trail. With five different color options, the Supercross will also fit nicely into the color palate of any runners wardrobe. Fit of the Supercross
