I don’t think you absolutely HAVE to read the first to enjoy the second, but they are both the same kind of fun. If you like the one, you’ll like the other.

So often we are just seeing just the parts they want us to see.THE SECRETS SHE KEEPS by MICHAEL ROBOTHAM is a gripping fast-paced suspenseful character-driven psychological thriller that had me totally engaged, entertained, and interested throughout this whole book. This book was extremely hard to put down. Delving into Agatha’s past, it was revealed that she was linked to multiple baby abductions in the past and had lost a daughter. Having acquired a gun and seen her crimes being reported on the news, Agatha went into flight or fight mode and a plan was laid out involving a Meghan-double to try and rescue Ben before it was too late. How many times have you looked at someone and thought "now there is someone who has it all?" Well I have. Plenty of times. This one was all kinds of juicy. You have perfect life Meg, she has handsome husband and two cute kids. Now she is pregnant with baby number three. She gets to stay at home with the kiddies and work on her mommy blog. For Agatha, lying to Meg comes easy because, she tells us, “the lies I tell others are nothing compared to the ones I tell myself” (p. 113). What are Agatha’s greatest self-deceptions? What are Meg’s? Which woman is more convinced by her own lies?

This story triggered something within me which gave me some massive anxiety - it took me six long days to finish it because I had to keep putting it down. But really, we're all reading because we want to feel something, right? And boy oh boy, did I ever feel all the emotions with this one. So many of my Goodread's friends praise the writing style and storytelling abilities of Mr. Robotham and now I know why. Agatha's boyfriend Hayden Cole (Michael Sheasby) had grown suspicious of Agatha, and he eventually found out the truth.I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. But for me, the suspense felt fabricated and spoon-fed. Not organic or really suspenseful at all. The romance seemed out of place for the way Ms. Dimon created the main female character. Not saying there couldn't have been a romance but the way it played out felt unlikely to the personality of the main female character.

This other man is just as demanding but for other reasons. Something about him lures the heroine to him. She feels attracted to him. He too, feels it. There's the connection bursting between them. They have to explore it before it drives them crazy. With danger around them, both need to keep their attention sharp. Maddie is the town's phone service and she handles police calls as well. She is trying to find another safe place for herself in a deserted cabin when someone comes in after her. She's sure it's the same person whose after her so she hits him in the head and runs. The next day the sheriff explains that she's the one at fault and that she owes Connor an apology and to make up for his stitches. Maddie is attracted to Connor but her life is in danger and that must come first. She doesn't know whether to stay and fight for her new life or to run again.Then you have Agatha, she works at the grocery store near Megs home and she is also pregnant. Her life is not all peachy keen though. Her boyfriend is gone since he is in the navy (He broke up with her before leaving but that's a detail that Agatha ain't worrying over.) Megan and Agatha befriend each other finding commonality in the fact that they are both pregnant and due just about the same time..... from the outside it appears as though Megan has the perfect life... but everyone in this book is keeping some secrets.... I love when an author can make even the most despicable of characters sympathetic.... throughout this book I didn't know who I was cheering for.... Overall, this novel was amazing! I loved it. Helenkay Dimon writes well. Her characters are three-dimensional. The plot was exciting and dark. I was kept in the dark on who and why as to the threats and danger for Maddie. The rest of the minor character added humor and mystery. I recommend giving this book a try! Robotham uses a dual narrative to tell the tale. It soon becomes apparent that Agatha is an unreliable narrator whose her awful childhood is meant to mitigate her actions as an adult, although some of those affected have difficulty seeing it this way. Meg’s emotions are more relatable and certainly her anguish is well-conveyed. Maddie has been on Whitaker Island ever since she got out of the witness protection program for the last two years. She still keeps to herself and is barely known by most of the island members.
