Description

As she lies dying, Lena drifts through time. She sees her girlhood in Lublin, Poland; her early young adulthood as an officer’s wife in the Polish mountains; and the most terrifying time of her life in Siberia as a prisoner of the Soviets. Over and over in Paula Lichtarowicz’s affecting novel, The Snow Hare, Lena confronts the loss of choice as she is taken here and there across Europe, losing and gaining family with each roll of history’s dice. With Lena, we have to wonder whether not free will is an illusion or if we can exert any power over what happens to us... Krebs, C. J., Boonstra, R. & Boutin, S. If Lena’s hypothesis is correct, saliva should begin to leak from his mouth. These emissions should be more plentiful for the familiar-smelling rabbit than for the mole she boiled yesterday. She may send the results to Moscow for the behaviourists to add to their research. Scientific progress depends on collaborative principles.

Throughout the second half of the book, you get the sense of foreboding - you know where Lena ends up, and you know that not everyone makes it. It's just a question of how it will happen, and it hovers over everything, making it so much more painful as you can't help getting attached to her family. It may be I saw a hint of cape,’ Ulka tells Ala on returning to earth and regaining her breath. She takes up apron corners to pat her cheeks dry. A seasonal difference in fur color is another remarkable adaptation: from grey-brown in summer, the fur becomes almost white in winter. He’s spotted you,’ Lena tells Ala, ‘the officer in the middle. The one with the glasses is staring.’ Exclosure experiments in Alberta indicated browsing by snowshoe hares during population peaks has the greatest impact on palatable species, thus further reducing the amount of available foods. In this study, insufficient nutritious young browse was available to sustain the number of snowshoe hares present in the peak years (1971 and 1972) in winter. [22]

There’s a rustling sound, a ripping of plastic. A woman is speaking, the voice telling her something is here now to ease the pain, to help her sleep. Adult snowshoe hares can travel up to three meters in just one leap and can reach speeds up to 45 kilometers per hour. Snowshoe hares feet are covered in long fur, which helps to protect them from the cold winter temperatures. Snowshoe hares require dense, brushy, usually coniferous cover; thermal and escape cover are especially important for young hares. [16] Low brush provides hiding, escape, and thermal cover. Heavy cover 10 feet (3m) above ground provides protection from avian predators, and heavy cover 3.3 feet (1m) tall provides cover from terrestrial predators. Overwinter survival increases with increased cover. [23] A wide variety of habitat types are used if cover is available. Base visibility in good snowshoe hare habitat ranges from 2% at 16.5 feet (5m) distance to 0% at 66 feet (20m). Travel cover is slightly more open, ranging from 14.7% visibility at 16.5 feet (5m) to 2.6% at 66 feet (20m). Areas with horizontal vegetation density of 40 to 100% at 50 feet (15m) are adequate snowshoe hare habitat in Utah. [25] Food habits [ edit ]

The Snow Hare by Paula Lichtarowicz | Goodreads

She spins round, barely daring to breathe, blood rushing from her head. Perhaps this time. This will be the time— While overall I did enjoy the book, there were parts that dragged for me at the start especially. I enjoyed the tension the author built around the birth of Lena’s daughter but I don’t want to give any spoilers. I am so grateful to Paula Lichtarowicz for writing about the Polish experience during World War II. I just don’t think there is much out there about it and it happened to over a million people! It made me aware that there was a great deal of suffering in the east as well as the west. And even after the war, Poland was given to Stalin at Yalta so that stories were probably never told. It’s actually a miracle that this one survived and I am also thankful that Little, Brown and Company published it and that I was given a free copy through Goodreads Giveaway. I would have gladly paid for it—it’s that good! Ims, R. A., Henden, J.-A. & Killengreen, S. T. Collapsing population cycles. Trends Ecol. Evol. 23, 79–86 (2008). Litvaitis, John A. (1990). The officer in the middle; the one with glasses.’ In this "riveting, heartfelt" novel of love and consequences (Heather Morris, New York Times bestselling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz), a woman dreams of becoming a doctor until World War II leads her instead into an astonishing love—and a fateful choice. If she keeps it up long enough Ala will give in. She just has to wait it out.

The gypsies, stupid. Ulka says they only travel on south-westerlies. And if they don’t come I’ll never get them.’ It was a bit disorienting in the beginning, but once I knew what was happening, I became engrossed in her story. Living in Poland when the Soviets invaded, her life was turned upside down when her family was sent to a Siberian camp. On p. 279, Lena tells Grigori, “Everything matters or nothing matters.” What does she mean? Do you agree? My daughter, at this moment your future seems no more perilous than a stream you might follow down from your mountain, isn’t that so? But what happens when other people jump in this clear stream of yours and muddy it with their boots?’ She held Lena’s gaze. ‘What happens when love creeps up and puts its hand on your shoulder, what then?’ [p. 28]This book is somewhat more into a story instead of giving some historical facts. It only provide me a plot and characters. the historical events nor political stuffs did not exist here. it was quite shallow on exposing historical stuff. Even the story wasn't really giving a depth. i love the MC, she is indeed a strong & independant woman who never fear to take a leap for the one that she loved. I also like the love story created here but it wasn't really memorable. Studd, E. K. et al.
