An excellent book from a perceptive and unshowy writer... The men Puntí writes about live on the edges, but for the most part, they've put themselves there, and can't figure out how to extract themselves. They chiefly have only themselves to blame for their troubles, although most of them either don't realize it or choose not to. They're maddening characters, and Puntí regards them with sympathy, but never valorizes their usually unfortunate decisions. It's an accomplished book, filled with bone-dry humor and incisive observations about people who desperately need to connect, but have no idea how. It's also a powerful literary reminder that nostalgia and magical thinking both threaten the way we relate to one another, and to ourselves." -- NPR I always thought he sounded a bit like Dusty Springfield in the chorus, which seemed oddly prescient when the Pet Shop Boys began working with her soon after wards. Great song though-probably one of his top five in the 80’s (post SS) Ongoing Covid restrictions, reduced air and freight capacity, high volumes and winter weather conditions are all impacting transportation and local delivery across the globe. I’m ashamed to say I never listened to the lyrics properly. Let’s face it, the key lyric everyone remembers is sha-la-la-la-laaa. 😉

Nothing to do with ‘This is not America’ but there’s a reasonably interesting programme available on the BBC for the next week or so for anyone interested: You mainly write on identity politics and religion, what advice would you give to anyone looking to write on these topics? Gonna get wasted.” Proud and solemn, Toni shows him two bottles of cheap vodka they must have bought five minutes ago. His roguish expression triggers the memory that Mai couldn’t stand Toni Forajido, that she used to say that he was a poseur and a moron. “We worked hard today, so we earned it. Yeah, Christa?” It has now been a few years since the George Floyd disruption, and Owolade’s book also serves as a calm account of why Britain lost its head during that time. He’s right to unravel our complex relationship with America: here in Britain, we need to keep an eye on the reality of racism, but we must realise that class, geography, family and agency are the key factors in levelling up our society. In the final chapter, he ends by writing:Many people believe that Britain is divided. Whether that be geographically with a north and south divide, politically after what happened with the Brexit vote or now through the cost-of-living crisis and the economic divide it’s causing. From the acclaimed, prize-winning Catalonian author of the novel Lost Luggage, a collection of nine masterful short stories about adulthood, heartbreak, and outsiders in search of their place in the world.

With the election of George W. Bush, the song’s title was irresistible, and it was soon used for blunt ends: P. Diddy, shaken out of his torpor to record a pissed-off rap, “American Dream,” for the film Training Day, sampled “This Is Not America,” with Bowie providing new vocals. The best of the latter-day covers was Charlie Haden’s, who in 2005 made “This Is Not America” a romp, a joyous collaboration that seems set out to disprove the song’s title: Haden’s version is America on one of its better, chaotic days. You’ve worked as a freelance writer for about five years, what articles/pieces of work are you most proud of during that time? Oh, I didn’t mean consciously copying Ferry. It should have been “copying”. Though I think it’s funny 2 of the better songs of Bowie’s 80’s output sound a bit like Ferry. Agree Ferry has been more solid with his solo music style. I think Bowie is more obviously dependent on inspiration from without and that’s one of the reasons the 80’s lapse happened…Ferry, I *think* is more inspired by his own fantasy world and has a specific sound he’s searching for but never going to any great extremes to achieve it. That’s the impression I get from his solo career, Roxy Music is a different story…even though after Eno left Roxy was pretty much his project as well… Owolade is not naïve. He recognises the reality of racism in modern Britain, and uses the last chapter to point to many of the recommendations put forward in the Sewell Report. These have since become mainstream policies in policing, health, education and employment. Personally, though, I’m happy that through writers such as Owolade, the conversation has moved from shouting and vitriol to sensible dialogue.Behind the self-confident image of world’s most influential country, we now see a nation tearing itself apart. The United States may be arguably the world’s only superpower, but its internal tensions are a symptom of suffering and division, a condition only exacerbated by the election of President Donald Trump. I actually haven’t seen the movie yet. I really should one of these days. Anyway, the song itself is certainly decent. It’s perhaps a tad lightweight, and perhaps just a bit too much on the smooth side. But otherwise a well-crafted, thoughtful pop tune. Nothing to complain about, really… He was about to protest, but he knew Mai was right, so in response he hugged her tighter. Then, in the deeper voice that came out of him when he was tipsy and got all transcendental, he whispered, “We’ll be our own kids.”
