Description

The castle, and all it represents, will always be with us. Once it was born, once the stone was made living, the repository of power made real, the idea could never be unmade. Even if all the castles of all the world were destroyed, in the minds of men they would be built anew; the wizard called imagination would raise high walls and towers out of ruins.” A Tolkien Bestiary is an illustrated reference book pertaining to the eras, flora, fauna, and people-groups of Middle-earth throughout all Ages, written by David Day in 1978 and currently published by Harbour Publishing (Canada).

A Tolkien Bestiary: As engrossing as Tolkien’s novels

Time magazine and The Observer named Day's The Doomsday Book of Animals the critics' book of the year in 1981. [6] Day has published six books of poems for adults and ten illustrated children's books of fiction and poetry. His non-fiction books on natural history include The Doomsday Book of Animals, The Whale War, Eco Wars: a Layman Guide to the Environmental Movement, Noah's Choice and most recently Nevermore: A Book of Hours - Meditations on Extinction (2012). Many people who claim that David Day's compilation is "trash", are those who insist that he makes up entries to satisfy white space. Day was born and raised in Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada. [4] His father worked as chief fireman for area military bases. [5] Day was editor of his high school's newspaper, and also contributed high school sports columns to the Victoria Daily Times, [6] graduating from Victoria High School in 1966. [7] For example, there is a reference to " Kraken" referring to the Watcher in the Water, but the word does not appear as a species in Tolkien's works. [2]

Develop

A Tolkien Bestiary is an illustrated collection of Middle Earth creatures. The drawings are stark, they are beautiful, they evoke emotion and brought to life the author's work at a time when there was little else to go on visually aside from - though personally beloved and earnest as they were - honestly subpar animated movies. While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence and the shaping of the modern fantasy genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the “father” of modern fantasy literature—or, more precisely, of high fantasy, as in the work of authors such as Ursula Le Guin and her Earthsea series. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. J. R. R. Tolkien – First Edition Identification Guide
