Description

Stalingrad, 1942 was a pivotal battle in WWII. For over five months the German forces tried to oust the Soviet Red Army in bitter fighting before finally capitulating after being cut off and surrounded. Undaunted: Stalingrad is a monumental standalone game that expands the series’ scope and challenge beyond anything that’s come before. Through its branching campaign, you’ll discover more of the hundreds of cards and tiles every time you play. Featuring more than 430 unique illustrations by Roland MacDonald and 150 evocative mission briefings written by acclaimed author Robbie MacNiven, immerse yourself in this campaign at the heart of the war. Stalingrad, 1942. Before you awaits a gruelling conflict in this cornerstone battleground. As the bullets and bombs tear the city asunder, only through wits and valour can you seize the cornerstone of the entire Eastern Front and change the course of history. You’re one of the few people who I don’t think would be dissuaded by the LONG but now coherent rulebook so I think I can recommend.

Awarded Best Board Game of 2022 - The best way to play World War II miniature gaming without any miniatures Unfortunately it cannot. There is hidden information for each side in some battles. It’s intended as a 1v1 experience.Undaunted: Stalingrad is a powerful experience. It takes Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson’s acclaimed system and marries it to a campaign format that is engrossing and transcendent. The battle of Stalingrad is captured with such purpose and intimacy that I felt as if I was wandering through an HBO miniseries immersed in dramatic action. They form a detailed graphical representation of an area South of central Stalingrad accurately depicting all the key landmarks as evidenced in the aerial photograph taken at the time. The artwork here and on the hundreds of individual soldier representations by Roland MacDonald is exemplary. It’s a system that forces you into endless awkward compromises. Riflemen, for example, are the only cards that can control tiles. But unless you have multiple matching cards you can’t both move and take control in the same turn. Instead, you have to risk them creeping forward, closing range and making them an easier target while allowing the enemy the chance to move up and contest the tile themselves. Most units have special actions, like engineers launching smoke or machine gunners laying suppressing fire, that you’ll have to balance with the need to move, shoot, and complete objectives. It’s an ongoing, fraught series of tough trade-offs. I enjoyed my first few plays of Stalingrad so thoroughly that I sought out more. That is, in the middle of a 15-scenario campaign, I diverted my attention to trying out Undaunted: Normandy. I needed to contextualize my experience with this particular iteration and work out some thoughts on the system. Campaign or not, Undaunted as a framework is a strong offering. Lead your stalwart troops to victory in this epic two-player campaign, played out in the war's most infamous city.

The 3 commanders on each side: 2 Squad Leaders and the overall Platoon Sergeant, are not physically represented on the battlefield and are immune from effects, both good and bad, except via the text in the RPG inspired scenario briefings. The consequences of the previous combat are then resolved. Depending on casualties taken up to 3 randomly-selected soldier cards will be removed. These are permamently removed from the campaign but do NOT rip them up! This is not a classic Legacy game but one that can be reset for further play. The cards have individual (fictitious) soldier names and these combatants are now gone. They are replaced, however, by Reserves. These new blood have their own identities but will have lesser abilities.Seconda Guerra Mondiale, fronte russo, Stalingrado.
