The hotshoe enables use of EX-series Speedlite flashguns, with E-TTL II wireless multi-flash support. The available white balance settings are Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash and Custom; there is no way to enter a Kelvin value manually. You can fine-tune any of the presets using the White Balance Correction feature. The ISO speed can be changed by pressing the ISO button and turning the control wheel or using the arrow buttons on the navigation pad. You do not have to hold down the button while changing the setting. The ISO speed can be set from ISO 100 to ISO 6,400 in full-stop increments, and Auto ISO is also available. The camera’s default aspect ratio is 3:2 and, somewhat unusually, there is no way to change this to any other aspect ratio prior to shooting. So if you do want your images to display in 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9 you’ll have to crop them post-capture using image editing software. Straight out of the box, the EOS 1100D has a distinctly entry-level feel. It is lightweight and made from what feels like a tough but low-density plastic, to keep costs down. Canon has done away with the textured handgrip of the EOS 1000D, and given the 1100D a shiny and smooth plastic finish all over. It remains a compact DSLR at 130x78x100mm and is just about the same size as its direct competition, although a shade larger than its predecessor. At 495g, it is a little heavier than the 1000D, too, but slightly lighter than other similar DSLRs on the market. Elsewhere, the Main menu button will take you to the camera’s advanced settings, while the red-dot button switches the camera into live view mode. The company is making no bones about the 1100D’s target entry-level audience – the camera is small, lightweight, easily navigated and feels like a budget-price model. White balance and colour The camera is equipped with a great lens-sensor arrangement that allows you to take pictures across a wide spectrum of lighting conditions. This is also seen in the low light performance of the camera. Dimly lit subjects can be captured with minimum image noise and without resorting to the flash by changing ISO, bulb and shutter speed settings. The settings within the camera can be used to optimize the lighting levels around the subject in focus. Creative Auto mode, meanwhile, is best described as a sort of halfway house between fully auto and more manual modes, with the 1100D allowing you to choose a ‘look’ for your photo and then allowing you to specify how much depth-of-field you want before making all the other calculations for you. As an easy-to-use creative mode it’s certainly useful, although we can’t really see how it helps beginners to learn the fundamentals of photography other than getting them to think about depth-of-field.
