Description

Paired with the M. Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 (effective focal length 34mm) or the M. Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ (effectively 28-84mm), the Pen E-P7 makes a neat little camera that won’t take up much room in your bag or weigh you down. It weighs just 337g with a battery and card, and adding the ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ lens takes it to 430g.

There are no less than 31 different Art Filters in total. The Art Filter digital effects are applied at the time of capture which means write speeds are inevitably a couple of seconds longer than for regular images. When shooting using certain filters, such as Diorama or Dramatic Tone, the screen's refresh rate slows, providing a real time preview of how the eventual image may look.

Favorites and Inspirational

Although it’s hard to assess exposure in bright conditions, the E-P7’s ESP metering generally does a great job so in most situations you can rely on the camera to produce a decent image. There’s also a histogram view that will let you know if the highlights are going to be burned out or underexposed etc, but it would be nice to have a viewfinder to be able to assess the image with a good preview. If you care about small (I DO) this camera is better than the GX9. If you must have an EVF then GX9 wins by default.

Low light sensitivity stretches from ISO 200 all the way up to a pro-like ISO 25600, partly down to the implementation of the 20.3 megapixel sensor and latest noise reducing TruePic VIII processor, with an extended LOW setting equivalent to ISO 100 also available. Go to your Olympus gear menu and find Rls [release] Priority and switch it to 'off'. You can choose to do so for single and continuous autofocus individually. The E-P7’s in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) also works in video mode and it does a great job of making hand-held footage watchable. It takes out the fine tremor so that the footage looks smooth. Olympus Pen E-P7 video quality The Olympus PEN E-P7 is a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera launched on 25 June 2021 by OM Digital Solutions under the Olympus brand. OM Digital Solutions became independent from Olympus Corporation on 9 October 2020 and took over the OM-D, PEN and ZUIKO brands. It is the first new model to be launched by OM Digital Solutions since its independence, with a retro-style design that echoes the design of the PEN-F launched in 2016, with aluminium dials and a pop-up flash. Though released recently, the E-P7 does not feature a USB Type-C port, but a Micro USB Type-B port as seen in previous generations. [1] [2] The Micro Four Thirds mount gives the PEN E-PL7 access to the broadest and most established native lens catalogue of all the mirrorless camera systems. At the time of writing, Micro Four Thirds had over 40 lenses available from Panasonic and Olympus along with third parties including Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Voigtlander and others. So while many rival mirror-less formats are struggling to offer even one lens in every category, Micro Four Thirds typically has two or more options available. The Olympus E-P7 certainly delivers in terms of focusing speed and perhaps more importantly accuracy too, with very few false positives. The sensor is paired with a TruePic VIII image processor. The camera has a native ISO range of 200-25,600, which can be extended down to ISO 100. When using Auto ISO, the range is 100-6,400. Exposure compensation is available in +/- 5 EV. Metering is provided by Digital ESP metering, which uses 324 areas. Metering modes include multi, center-weighted, spot, and spot with highlight/shadow control. The last option on this tool bar is an on-board shooting hints and tips manual, with the usual 'suspects' of photographing children and pets given the most prominence ('take a picture at their height level' being a summation of the level of advice imparted). We even get tips, as a bit of closet advertising, for attaching Olympus accessories, such as lens converters. While the cameras in the OM-D series can be considered Olympus’ high-end workhorses, the Pen line-up has always been more about combining beauty and style with innovative features – a philosophy that both the recently announced Pen E-PL8 and its predecessor, the Pen E-PL7, embrace. The E-PL7 features built-in Wifi which you can use to connect to a smartphone for picture sharing, GPS tagging and remote control. To use the Wifi you’ll need the Olympus Image Share app which is currently available for Android and iOS devices, I tested it with my iPhone 4S.
