While the diversity of Buddhist schools of thought makes it all but impossible to encapsulate the tradition in one book, Buddhist Philosophy: Essential Readings is as comprehensive an attempt as any. This is by no means an indictment against Buddhism, as a lot of western religions have similar issues. People who recommend this book say the author does a good job of clearing up misunderstandings about Buddhism and providing a Buddhist perspective on modern issues.The other three volumes are themselves important reading, but they tackle topics that are more technical in nature and are very repetitive. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama wrote a letter of praise for this book which appears in the beginning. If you want to dive right into the Buddha’s teachings and read the actual sutras (discourses) that the Buddha taught to his followers, then you will probably enjoy this book.
