I sped through this book- I’ve visited Rwanda several times and have definitely enjoyed this book by way of revisiting places I have been (and currently live in Uganda) and people that you hear about.

Michela Wrong has constructed a thorough and detailed account of Rwanda's bloody history and put her own life at risk to get such incredible details. One imagines that once the character of the fairy tale villain had been conceived, such neat, exquisite comparisons must have flowed almost unbid. In a dirt-poor, landlocked Rwanda, where every plot was already accounted for, self-betterment always seemed like a zero-sum game: for me to prosper, you must fail.

com/ Max Milo Éditions is a French publishing house created in 2000 by Jean-Charles Gérard, Christophe Guinel, and Daniel Gérard. Rwanda’s massacres, in contrast, were pre-agreed, public affairs, conducted using the most democratic of tools. i kept thinking there are two definitions of a great book: first, the ones where the derivative of knowledge with respect to pages is the highest in absolute value. We are asked to believe that everything good we may have heard, or read, about Rwanda, under the leadership of the RPF, and the RPF under the leadership of Paul Kagame, is a mirage.

Now another Tutsi force was on the move, and Rwanda’s own president—the third Hutu head of state in the region killed by Tutsi assassins, they’d been told—was dead. Unofficially, the villa stands as a testament to presidential paranoia, a reminder of how power tends to change hands in this region: suddenly, and with extreme violence. Rwanda’s Hutus had watched in horror in the 1960s and 1970s as relatives and friends in neighboring Burundi had been slaughtered by that country’s Tutsi army. But what of Wrong, who surely must know that she was regurgitating the Hutu Power line, virtually verbatim?

The objective seems not to try to draw as true a picture of the character of Paul Kagame as possible, but to assassinate that character. That would explain her constant reference to his charisma, how he could “win anyone over with his smile/laughter”, his “sensitive, hooded eyes”, “honeydew skin”, etc. It is always important to hear both sides of the argument as extensively as possible before coming to a conclusion on the matter - although Wrong certainly did a great job for the anti-Kagame side and all those he’s sidelined, exiled, jailed, or executed in the past 25+ years. And Fred Rwigyema (1957-90), the charismatic and much-loved leader of the revolutionary army who might well have led Rwanda had he survived the fighting. Hearing the engine of the descending jet, Habyarimana’s family knew the president was about to land.No one will ever be able to adequately explain how so many respectable, ordinary members of a community—not the random psychopaths every society throws up—ended up in Rwanda turning on people they had shared drinks with in bars, sat next to in church, jostled up against at the market, and cut them down. Ever since the 1994 genocide that killed more than half a million Rwandans, mainly from the Tutsi minority ethnic group, Kagame has been hailed around the world as the man who stopped the killing and forged a new nation that quickly became the darling of the international aid community. They are responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, and are trying to bring down the Rwandan government and start another war - the last thing our people need!
