About this deal

One recent study estimated that it would take five Earths to sustain the global human population if everyone had the consumption habits of Americans. Fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, she is trying to piece together a life for them in a small town far off the beaten track.

This historical mystery set in 1911 in Coney Island is one to read if you enjoy being whisked away to a different time period! The author made her come alive and I acutely felt her struggles which for me is a hallmark of a great characters and story. A summer on Coney Island, unsolved murders, an illicit affair between an heiress and an imigrant, drugs. The increase in opiate painkiller prescriptions created a new class of addicts in parts of the country that had never before seen such rates of addiction. It falls on the shoulders of Colonel William Tecumseh Bastian to keep Dreamland as far away from the congressional chopping block as possible. It seems that Peggy must meet the demands of her family now that her sister, Lydia, is marrying one of the richest men in New York. Doctors who prescribed opiate painkillers were seen as “outlaws,” as opiate painkillers were highly addictive.

The experimental program revolves around a method of blending a pilot’s senses with electronic data. The main character, Peggy Batternberg, daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the country, is spending the summer with her family on Coney Island--much to her chagrin. Because of this, the murder mystery fell to a quiet whisper until chapter 28 (or 78% into the story on a Kindle) when Peggy decides to look for the killer who has been murdering women on the island.

Or, it's possible that my memory to play some tricks on me because, you know, there are years and years from when I have read The Night Circus.

Journalist David Leonhardt’s ambitious first book, “ Ours Was the Shining Future: The Story of the American Dream,” seeks to answer these vital questions. I can’t even begin to tell you how pleased I have been lately with all of my new historical fiction releases! Freema Agyeman was great to watch in a totally different role to the marvellously well put together Dr Helen Sharpe in New Amsterdam. This revolutionary notion that patients were “entitled” to pain relief factored heavily into the work of Russell Portenoy and Kathleen Foley, American doctors who introduced Palliative care into mainstream American medicine. A sincere thanks to Nancy Bilyeu, Endeavour Quill/Endeavor Media Ltd and NetGalley for providing me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. When Peggy, the rebellious 20 year old protagonist from a wealthy Manhattan family reminiscent of the real life Guggenheims, is forced into spending the summer with her family in a luxurious hotel near Coney Island, she escapes to the forbidden Dreamland one day, and a whole new world opens to her of romance, murder, and family drama. So when Bilyeau places Peggy and the others in Dreamland, I can attest to the accuracy of her descriptions of the surroundings. The stigmatization of opiates, though somewhat warranted, resulted in the suffering of many patients in legitimate need of pain relief.

I suspected who the real murderer was for a while but that didn't make the story lacking in any way. Nevertheless, she heads off to the hotel, as is expected of her, and she quickly finds a freedom in this carefree place. Barring the discovery of truly miraculous sources of clean energy — and unlimited supplies of the minerals and materials used to manufacture the stuff we consume — an environmentally sustainable American Dream in this and future centuries may need to look quite different from the ways it has until now. It’s a chronicle of almost a century of American economic life, rich with historical details and resonant narratives. There are some distinctly unlikable male characters in the book including senior members of the Batternberg family who indulge in immoral behaviour whilst insisting on high standards of propriety from their own wives and daughters. After many years of running the farm, he managed to make it much more profitable, and he decided to take a three-week break, singing in a bar at St.
