The creation story in Genesis shows how God made the world and everything in it in six days, resting on the seventh. On the one hand, the curriculum is faith-friendly and discusses important Biblical moments (Abraham, the Twelve Tribes, the Exodus) as history, which some secular homeschools may not appreciate. The instructions in the activity guides tell how to have children narrate (summarize orally) the main ideas from that chapter in two to five sentences.

I’ve grouped these together as many book lists don’t distinguish between Early Modern and Modern History. Being a world history curriculum, the use of maps can be quite important in providing students with important geographic context to history.The core of The Story of the World is made up of its history books (available in softcover, hardcover, PDF and CD/MP3 audiobook format) and its activity books (softcove, PDF).

The Story of the World books are chronological, starting with ancient history in volume one and finishing up with modern in volume 4.Combined with the flexibility of its suggested activities and the choice provided in terms of suggested readings and additional materials, the program can be surprisingly affordable for most families.

Even my 3 year old was running around the house saying “If I were Hammurabi…” We love the activity book and we pick and choose what activities work for us. But to assess comprehension and retention for students in grades four and up, a book of tests (with answer keys) is available for each volume.
