Description

In her new book The Gift she shares some of her best advice for confronting life’s challenges and building a meaningful existence. A willingness to cultivate within yourself whatever kindles light, and to shine that light into the darkest places. When I finally shared my story, a weight was lifted off my shoulders, and I finally saw what it meant to be a survivor and not a victim. It’s better to risk and grow, and maybe fail, than to remain imprisoned, never knowing what could have been.

The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life by Edith Eger - Goodreads

Coming clean is a podcast committed to bringing together thought leaders from across the globe to help others adapt, evolve, and thrive in this ever new changing world. Or perhaps you’ve gone through extreme adversity, possibly even trauma, addiction, or an abusive relationship. Our thoughts and beliefs determine, and often limit, how we feel, what we do, and what we think is possible. As one of a dwindling number of Holocaust survivors, Eger feels compelled to share her stories of horror, and hope. I stop focusing on why this bad thing happened—or is happening—and start paying attention to what I can do with my experience. Edith discusses why she felt like her Nazi guards were more imprisoned than she was, what forgiveness truly means, how to free your mind from the shackles of the past, and so much more.

The best love advice: A 93-year-old psychologist gives guidance

I have helped countless others lead full lives by moving beyond their problems –no matter how insurmountable they believed them to be.I listened to as much of her interviews as I could, then I read her second book and I thought what would it be like for me to meet her, not only in my imagination, but in real life…and life was generous with me.

As you heal from something traumatic, let your experiences shape you for the better, and allow yourself to grieve so that you can move forward with purpose.

We’re going to be affected by environmental and genetic factors over which we have little or no control. I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to somebody who was so free, and I think if we can all take 1% of what you have going on, we can all be bit freer in our lives. Try to think of a specific moment, not a generalized impression of that relationship or time of life. Edith is an embodied teacher who gifts us with the wisdom that we are not not victims of our past, but powerful creators of our future. I earned my doctorate in clinical psychology in 1978 and I’ve been treating patients in a therapeutic setting for over forty years.

Edith Eger Home - Dr. Edith Eger

One of my takeaways from The Choice was a desire to have the opportunity to be counselled by Dr Eger, a survivor whose experiences, compassion and insight combine to allow her to get to the root of a problem before she lovingly guides you towards the you that you’ve been stifling under layers of pain, anger, [insert relevant adjective/s here], and paralysing what if’s. Support groups and twelve-step programs can be a wonderful place to share your truth —and learn from others who are doing the same. Her first book The Choice, released in 2018, details her story of courage and resilience as a survivor of Auschwitz. If there’s some part of yourself you routinely resent or criticize, imagine yourself being very little, so tiny you can crawl inside your body and say hello to each of your organs, to each part of yourself. As long as you say you can’t forgive someone, you’re spending energy being against rather than being for yourself and the life you deserve.Eger’s new book, “ The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life,” offers wisdom on resilience, grief and finding hope in the darkest times. Her unique background gives her amazing insight, and I think many people will find comfort right now from her suggestions on how to handle difficult situations. If I complain to you that I hurt my thumb, and you say, “Oh, honey, I just saw a person that doesn’t have an arm,” then I’m going to feel guilty for feeling the way I do. She has appeared on numerous television programs, including CNN and the Oprah Winfrey Show, and she was the primary subject of a holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch National Television.
