Evangeline wakes up six weeks later with the help of the Fate, Poison, and sees that a lot of things have changed in that time. There’s a lot of it, and wasn’t done subtlety or in small pieces, like you might see elsewhere in other novels. I say it’s a subplot, but I honestly couldn’t tell you what was the main plot and what were subplots in this book. This was a much lighter fantasy book that was so fun to read in contrast to the other fantasy books I’ve read. I also had no glue what this story was about before going in or how magical it was gonna get, which surprised me.

Jacks’ past with Donatella is briefly mentioned, but I wouldn’t really class that as him having personality, and I think it’s more fanservice for existing Caraval fans than anything. Shady, secretive, maybe a cinnamon roll or maybe he's actually pretty wicked and we all just don't know but really no one cares because none of us promised to fall for a good guy anyway. The way the author builds this world completely transported me into a fairytale landscape with a sharp edges. Garber weaved a lot of threads throughout Once Upon a Broken Heart, and they got tangled up at times. Fans of Caraval will rave over this one and it’s a perfect read for fans of fantasies and fairy tales.Ho comunque apprezzato molto questa lettura, e mi sono fatta trasportare molto volentieri attraverso i suoi luoghi mistici e misteriosi. She could describe a man with pale rock skin and vampires with glowing muscles and I would believe that ish like it was hot chocolate and I was, well, me.

Desperate to stop the wedding, and heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. Sono molto curiosa di leggere il sequel, sperando che includa una maggiore introspezione sul personaggio di Jacks. He held on to her as if she were a grudge, his body rigid and tense, as if he really didn’t want her there, and yet his arms were tight around her waist as though he had no intention of ever letting her go.

But I did get to meet Jacks and fell for him (to be honest, he was the main reason why I picked up Caraval in the first place).

I have been hold off diving into this series for a while cause I thought that you had to read her frist series before going I to this one. But her dealings with Jacks, the Prince of Hearts, complicate her goals and often leave her left in a bigger mess than when she began - ya know, as stone. But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game—and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. It was like a complete abuse of authorial power on Garber’s part: she thought vampires were cool, so she just put them in the book, with no real thought as to the sense (or lack thereof) it would make.not to mention the fact that they’re literally perfect for each other despite being complete opposites. However, there were some details I wish were different and that's why this book wasn't 5 stars for me. One min he’s willing to help (though at a cost), the next he’s a trickster (u can’t forget the pure enjoyment he had from manipulating her into those kisses), truthful to an extent and ultimately self serving so it seems.
