Daniel Talbot, a student at Devington School, dies after being attacked and stabbed during the annual St. The villagers of Morton Fendle are up in arms when they find out that the local craft centre (a mill conversion), in which they had invested, is facing financial uncertainty. As the investigation continues, local philanthropist Howard Richardson and his social-climbing wife Zukie irritate the community when they introduce their own plans for the annual village charity occasion. At the same time, he had been making investigations of his own into the possibility the future supermarket's land was contaminated.
