A subwoofer crossover frequency this high may not be possible when using a single subwoofer. The listener might be able to identify the sound coming from the subwoofer as discreet from the location of the satellite speakers. This would destroy the soundstage and imaging. So, for use with a single subwoofer, the THX-standard crossover frequency of 80Hz would probably be a better choice. The Early Reflections curve is an estimate of all single-bounce, first-reflections, in a typical listening room. They come in two scratch-resistant vinyl finishes, Ebony and Walnut, and I liked the quality of the Ebony samples I received. They did in fact look like they would resist scratches well. Klipsch says the 600M II’s enclosure has been upgraded with heavy furniture-grade materials, and it also seems there has been some enhancement to the internal bracing.

Another observation is that the speakers performed exceptionally well when placed at a distance of at least 18 inches from the rear wall. It is typical when it comes to bookshelf speakers when placed over a stand. The RP-160M blends seamlessly into any setting thanks to its high-quality wood grain veneer and brushed polymer finish. Furthermore, it is portable and lightweight thanks to the ceramic-spun copper woofer.The KEF LS50's sound was more rounded than the RP-600M's—darker, slightly veiled, more compressed. Through the KEFs, Melnikov's piano was smaller and farther from the microphones. Sometimes, it seemed that the LS50s couldn't keep up with Melnikov's fingerings. It also needs to be mentioned that these Klipsch RP-600M speakers can be driven with lower-powered electronics. Their 96dB (1w/1m) sensitivity gives them flexibility to work with amplifiers that just couldn’t be considered with less efficient speakers. Remember that the average home stereo listener uses less than one watt for “normal” listening and no more than 10 watts for “really LOUD” listening. And those numbers apply to just about all speakers, most of which are less sensitive than the Klipsches. 96dB is LOUD! And that’s what these speakers can give you with only one watt.

Intended primarily for home theater use, the Klipsch RP-600M speakers are available with a full spectrum of supporting center channel, subwoofer, and surround speaker equipment. Although I did not review the entire Klipsch RP home theater ensemble, I have heard it on display in stores, and find it to be entirely adequate to its task. Titanium dome tweeters have been out of fashion for a while now. Yet the Klipsch’s 25mm unit is aided and abetted by Tractrix horn loading, and proves a game changer. It’s a Klipsch trademark and here it confers greater sensitivity upon the tweeter and helps sound propagate out into the room better. At 1.5kHz it crosses over to the mid/bass unit, which looks very colourful with its 165mm spun copper Cerametallic cone. This is claimed to be stiffer and less prone to break up than conventional cones. Additionally, it has superior bass, so if a subwoofer is outside your budget, consider this. After all, there is a reason why the RP-600M is the upgraded version of the 160M. Surge suppressor versus plugged directly into the wall? Easy to tell the difference! OPPO direct to power amplifiers versus inserting the Audio GD preamp between the two? Easy to tell the difference! Working in conjunction with the woofer, the rear-mounted Tractrix port smooths the airflow for a clear and tuneful bottom end. Even the deepest notes are smoothly handled, with minimal distortion or turbulence. The grilles of the magnet add class to it. There are plenty of other highly desirable qualities. These include the highly attractive price of them and the great electrifying performance that they offer. Another positive was their overall appearance, which earned a lot of positive comments from both family and friends who walked past them during the review process. Most people didn’t believe the price and were not turned off by their size (15.7” H by 8″ W by 11.9″ D). The magnetically attached grill covers reduce the overall output by 1dB and there is no question that they impart a tiny veil over the sound. The RP-600M do require robust loudspeaker stands if you really want to pull every last bit of performance out of them. I initially listened to these speakers with my Arcam AVR-550 receiver. Now the Arcam is one of the very best-sounding AV receivers in my experience, but when I switched from the Arcam to the separate stereo components, the difference was jaw-dropping.
